I wish, I wish I was a better musician

July 22, 2008

I’m going to be starting a 3 year music course at university in September and I’m kind of worried that my other classmates are going to be better musicians than me. I’ve been playing the guitar and other instruments (vocals, drums and keyboard) for quite a few years now, but my music theory isn’t great and I sometimes feel that my ears are let me down.

I’ve been doing some research and I’ve found that a great way to improve as a musician is to learn perfect pitch (also known as absolute pitch). Perfect pitch means that you can name any note or chord by ear – how cool is that?. It doesn’t stop there though. Not only will I be able to tune my guitar perfectly by ear but I will be able to instantly name key signatures, work out chords and intervals and even compose music in my head.

Having perfect pitch will hopefully give me a head start over all the other musicians in my class and give me the confidence I’ve always lacked as a musician. I know I haven’t got very long to learn perfect pitch, but I have found a course called the Pure Pitch Method that only takes 6-weeks. The great thing is that you can study the pure pitch method even if you don’t know any music theory.

If I start now I should have achieved perfect pitch just before the start of term. I’ll keep you posted on my progress and let you know if it really works. Wish me luck!
